Helen, A Woman Focused

I’m intrigued by every person who has the ability and talent to relentlessly confront a public figure on issues of accountability. But there is a special talent in being able to do that and come across as courteous and professional. That adds up to Helen Thomas when she held Bush up to a get real standard yesterday.

I'd like to ask you, Mr. President, your decision to invade Iraq has caused the deaths of thousands of Americans and Iraqis, wounds of Americans and Iraqis for a lifetime. Every reason given, publicly at least, has turned out not to be true. My question is, why did you really want to go to war? From the moment you stepped into the White House, from your Cabinet -- your Cabinet officers, intelligence people, and so forth -- what was your real reason? You have said it wasn't oil -- quest for oil, it hasn't been Israel, or anything else. What was it?

In the end, Helen didn’t get an answer. I think she knew Bush wouldn't get real with her -- or us.

Cloaked within her question was a huge statement to U. S. Citizens: Bush has not told us the truth about why he insisted on sending our kids to War.

Helen, I'm just reading between the lines, but there seems to be something else eating at you. What was going to be your follow up question?

Our First Amendment is Bush’s sword. In spite of his efforts, he has failed to totally rid us of our U.S. Constitution. Although Helen gave him a polite shove, Bush fell on the sword.

I would ask Bush to go home. But, that would mean Texas. I live in Texas. Maybe he could engage in travel abroad for the next 20-30 years. That should do it.
